Introduction

Hello, my name is Daniel Riley and you've reached the site of a blog I wrote during my time as an exchange student in Nagoya, Japan. In the wake of the triple disasters of earthquake, tsunami, and Fukushima nuclear incident, I have decided to repurpose the site as an aggretation of resources for those interested in helping the survivors of these disasters. Those interested in reading about my time in Japan can still do so in the Archives. Thank you for reading, I hope you find a way to support the people of Japan in this time of need.

The Gamer

So guess what everyone? It's almost four in the morning again and here I am just finishing up the blog post. Thankfully for my studies I can survive on very little sleep, and thankfully for the blog I do my best writing after two in the morning. But I didn't log on to Blogger tonight to talk about my lack of sleep, I came here to talk to you about the reason for my lack of sleep, specifically the Japanese love of games.
My compatriots here at Ohmeikan take their video games seriously, and it is a fearful sight to see some of them play. Now, I know understand that most of you are probably not avid video gamers, but I'm sure you can appreciate the sheer dexterity and quickness of thought that is required to play games at the speed of the players in the videos below.

This is what they do when they are bored.
It is understandable then, to think that these fine gentlemen on my floor would take umbrage with someone challenging their standing. This is where me and Bob come in to play.

Bob.
Bob is another American NUPACE student staying at Ohmeikan, and he seems to consider himself something of a “Gamer”, or someone who is quite good at video games of all types. As a side note Bob also has a blog of his own about video games here in Japan. It's called “The Nagoya Arcade”, and I have included a link here. Now back to the topic, and the reason I have been up until four in the morning so many nights recently. You see, once you beat someone here at video games, they don't just give up. I've spent at least three nights here defending my title as the champion of the one game that I happen to be very good at(Super Smash Bros, for those who might know it), and they keep challenging me. This is in some way great, because I am becoming good friends with my floor mates, but it is also bad for the obvious reason that I am posting this to you at four in the morning.

Oh well, I'm a college student, I don't need sleep right?

Special Japanese time! Since I was too tired yesterday I think I will do a longer one today.
